What Is ADHD?
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that can affect attention, activity level, impulse control, organization, and emotional self-management. ADHD begins in childhood, but symptoms can continue through adolescence and adulthood.
According to recent CDC data, approximately 13.2% of Alabama children ages 3–17 were reported to have a current ADHD diagnosis. Researchers have not identified one single cause of ADHD, although genetics are believed to play a significant role.
ADHD can look different from one person to another. Some individuals primarily experience difficulty with attention and organization, while others experience more hyperactivity or impulsivity. Many experience a combination of symptoms.
What Can ADHD Look Like?
ADHD affects executive functioning—the mental skills we use to focus, plan, organize, remember information, manage emotions, and regulate behavior. These skills work much like the brain’s management system, helping us begin tasks, monitor our progress, and adjust our actions.
Children, adolescents, and adults with ADHD may experience:
Difficulty maintaining attention or completing tasks
Forgetfulness or frequently losing important items
Challenges with planning, organization, and time management
Difficulty beginning tasks, even when they are important
Trouble transitioning between tasks or activities
Impulsive decisions or difficulty pausing before acting
Restlessness, fidgeting, or feeling constantly “on the go”
Difficulty regulating emotions or managing frustration
Problems remembering and using newly learned information
Difficulty following multi-step instructions
Frequently interrupting or struggling to wait
Becoming easily distracted by thoughts, sounds, or surroundings
Experiencing some of these difficulties does not automatically mean that a person has ADHD. Stress, anxiety, depression, sleep difficulties, learning differences, and other conditions can produce similar symptoms. A comprehensive evaluation considers the individual’s history, symptoms, functioning, and experiences across different settings.
